How do I obtain my marriage certificate?

The county clerk who issues your marriage license will provide you with the steps to obtain the certificate. Generally you must submit an application a few weeks after your completed license has been filed via mail or in person and pay a fee. Fees may vary depending on the county you obtain your license.

When do I need a marriage license?

In California you must get your license before the marriage ceremony. Once you receive your license you may get married that same day! Otherwise you must be married within 90 days of the date the marriage license was issued.

Who needs a marriage license?

Any couple who plans to get married in the state of California must obtain a license prior to holding the ceremony.

Will IBW obtain my license for me?

IBW is not permitted to obtain marriages licenses on behalf of their clients. Our officiant will complete your license on your wedding day. If you provide your own officiant, they are required to complete your marriage license. It’s important to note your marriage is not official until the marriage license has been filed at the issuing clerk’s office.

What is the difference between a Marriage License and a Marriage Certificate?

A marriage license authorizes your marriage while a marriage certificate proves your marriage.

Additional Information For Non-Citizens

Generally the requirements to get married in the U.S. are the same for both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens. Passports are accepted as identification but make sure you check with the local county clerk to make sure you have all the required documentation. It’s important to check with your local authorities to make sure your marriage will be recognized in your home country.

Public Vs. Confidential Marriage License

 

Public Marriage License

  • Both parties must be 18 years of age or older.

  • The marriage license is registered at the County Recorder’s Office in the county where the license was purchased, and is a public record.

  • Anyone may request copies of the marriage certificate.

  • The ceremony can take place anywhere within the State of California.

  • You must have at least one witness present at your ceremony.

Confidential Marriage License

  • Both parties must 18 years of age or older.

  • Both parties must swear in writing that they are currently living together as spouses.

  • The marriage ceremony may be performed within the State of California.

  • No witness are required to be present at your ceremony.

  • Your license is not public record. Only the couple may request a copy of the license.
